About

Over 20 years in theatre directing, education, and administration.

I have a passionate commitment to making exceptional theatre for the community. When I moved to Durham, North Carolina 20 years ago, I found there was no dependable venue for producing theatre. I was the managing director of a small theatre company that needed a home. Seeing many others had that need, I led the community in converting a centrally located warehouse into a 75-seat venue. Common Ground Theatre was home to artists both local and global, and reached audiences of diverse ages and socioeconomic backgrounds. I served as the executive director for this non-profit theatre for a decade, where I was tasked with all artistic and administrative duties. CGT led the artistic community in the Raleigh/ Durham/ Chapel Hill area of North Carolina toward a collaborative model for theatre that persists today.

I am an innovative and multi-disciplined theatre artist and have been a professional stage director since 1997. My directing credits are expansive and eclectic; I have experience anywhere from intimate two-handers to full band musicals. Some of my favorite projects include a high-concept version of The 39 Steps and a multi-space promenade of Fefu and Her Friends. During Covid, I kept busy by expanding my digital perspective and skills by focusing my creative energy towards directing digital art projects for the university and the Artist Soapbox Podcast.

I am dedicated to theatre education and I have taught consistently since graduate school, most recently full-time at North Carolina State University. There I was the main instructor for the program and taught acting, voice, and specialty classes. I developed curriculum and served as a major influence in the artistic and academic decisions for our program. I was co-artistic director of our second stage series designed to give our students an opportunity to explore socially aware theatre. This collaborative project focused on marginalized voices and non-traditional plays, like Fefu and Her Friends, and gave opportunities to student designers and directors. Through this program, we saw student of color participation double, and student ticket sales triple.
